Mirage [transitory]
MIRAGE [TRANSITORY], THE NEW CREATION BY DAMIEN JALET AND KOHEI NAWA WILL PREMIERE ON SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2024, AT IMMERSIVE « THEATRE 010 », FUKUOKA, JAPAN
The concept of “Mirage” refers to a visual phenomenon created by the refraction of light by the atmosphere. In this new collaboration, Damien Jalet and Kohei Nawa aim to depict the unknown landscape that lies beyond.
The dancers change their forms from moment to moment, just like the flickering light, the changing weather, or the evolving plants and animals. Through the interaction of these different forms, the boundaries between seemingly opposing concepts, such as life and death, the ancient and the future, as well as harmony and chaos, are explored. Eventually, the stage, where even the boundary between information and matter has become blurred, will become a place of transformation.
“Mirage [transitory],” will premiere on the 27th of September 2024 at THEATER 010, an immersive theater in Fukuoka, Japan, which is designed to dissolve the boundaries between performers and the audience, crafting a profoundly engaging and interactive experience.
It will be presented for 12 performances from September 27th to October 6th, 2024.
In “Mirage [transitory]”, Damien Jalet and Kohei Nawa weave a dense space-time between the audience and the dancers in the interactive realm of THEATER 010, a cutting-edge immersive theater in Fukuoka, Japan, that is designed to dissolve the boundaries between performers and the audience, crafting a profoundly engaging and interactive experience.
Jalet and Nawa, renowned for their global collaborations across genres and mediums, have been working together since 2014. Their decade-long partnership has birthed expressions that transcend the realms of science and myth, sculpture and dance. Expanding the universe of their previous collaborative trilogy, “VESSEL”, “Mist” and “Planet [wanderer]”, this project aims to scale their past explorations on a more intimate level.
This collaboration between the two pushes further to explore the thin and fragile area that straddles opposing concepts—life and death, solid and liquid, ancient and future, harmony and chaos—so a search for the boundaries between different things becomes a performance itself. Confused and perplexed, various things and matters, collide, intertwine, and eventually melt together through transformative scenes. The stage becomes a ‘place of transformation’ where information and matter are mixed, revealing that change is the only constant in life.
On stage, the dancers confront various materials, transforming their bodies like flickering light, changing weather, or the flora and fauna that undergo constant evolution and metamorphosis within them. Life pulsates between information and matter, eventually spiraling upwards into the sky. This transformation, echoing the spiral spatial composition of ‘THEATER 010,’ will turn the viewer’s body and the space around them into a ‘place of transformation,’ inspiring and intriguing the audience with the power of change and evolution.
